I began the practice of recording improvised acapella vocals while consuming extremely cheap beer in 2012. I later took some of these and added sounds, burps, strangled guitar and other filigree to fill them out, as is my practice this is intended to be consumed as a blues/folk record with the trappings of earnest howling and low fumbling set in a laptop-as-interlocutor setting. Part of the inspiration of this record is Bruce Russell's 21st century Prison Songs And Field Hollers, where he stuck to solo improvised guitar if I recall correctly, but the suggestion of taking that earnestness found in the primitive means available to musicians at the turn of the last century and applying it to our present time and place was attractive. As well the idea of what is communicated simply by the delivery of a set of syllables, whether or not there is anything more being conveyed than that someone is experiencing psychic pain. Also the title references the first president of the 90s. GHWB only served one term and was quickly ousted when a limp economy and the 1st Iraq War failed to properly scare or rally anyone around him. This lesson was quickly learned by his son who ended up building the most perfect Middle East restructuring apparatus that to this day sits on our collective chests like an unmovable albatross hence Herbert Walker Blues turns out simply to be our reality. Blues, I believe denotes economic realities primarily.
